The complete self-surrender of the reason is a partially impossible and wholly self-deceptive
operation. In this endeavour men act unconsciously on the principle of
Ananias. Pretending to resign their whole intellect to a creed or
dogma, they still by an uncontrollable instinct "keep back part of the
price".
